The best smart home devices for Google Home

Google Home is at its best with Google's own Nest thermostat and doorbell, and with Matter devices from everyone else. The catch is that Google's speakers and displays are mostly sold by Google itself.

The best Google Home setup pairs the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) and the Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) with Matter devices from other brands. Google's Nest displays double as Thread border routers, but buy them from Google directly.

Matter certified
  • Matter certification is new for this generation, which is what finally lets an Apple Home household buy a Nest.
  • Remote temperature sensors fix the single biggest complaint about every thermostat: the hallway is not the bedroom.
  • It builds a schedule by watching, which matters because almost nobody ever programs a thermostat by hand.

Cloud; short free previews, longer history on Premium
  • Wired power means no battery to recharge, and live view is there whenever you open the app.
  • Alerts separate people, packages, vehicles and animals rather than firing on everything that moves.
  • Without a subscription Google keeps a few hours of event previews in its cloud (its support page says up to six for this model). Thirty or sixty days of event history, and 24/7 recording, need a Google Home Premium plan.

Skip this ifWired only, and recording depends on working Wi-Fi and internet: there is no SD card and no battery. No doorbell transformer at the door means an electrician or a different model.

Nest speakers and displays

The Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) acts as a Thread border router and Matter controller, which makes it a hub and a screen in one. When this site last checked, the only Amazon listings for it came from third-party sellers at well above Google's price, so it is not linked here. Buy Google's speakers and displays from Google or a major retailer.

What Google Home Premium adds

Nest cameras and doorbells work without a subscription, with live view and a short window of free event previews. Google's support page lists up to six hours of previews for the newest Nest Doorbell. A Google Home Premium plan extends saved event history to 30 or 60 days, adds 24/7 recording on wired devices with the Advanced plan, and unlocks Gemini features such as searchable history.

FAQ

Questions people ask
