The best smart plugs, sorted by the network they join
A smart plug is the cheapest device that makes something in your house automatic. It is also the purchase most people make twice, because the first one joined the wrong network.

The TP-Link Tapo P110M is the best smart plug for most homes, because it is Matter certified over plain Wi-Fi and works on every major platform without a hub. Apple homes with a border router should take the Eve Energy instead.

It is set up and managed inside the Alexa app, so there is no extra brand account to create.
The body is compact enough that the second outlet in the wall plate stays free, per Amazon's listing.
Amazon says it reconnects to Alexa on its own after a power or Wi-Fi outage, which is the failure that makes people unplug cheap plugs for good.
Skip this ifAlexa only, and the listing mentions no energy monitoring. If anyone in the house uses Google Home or Apple Home, buy a Matter plug instead.
Joins your router directly and appears in every platform
Is Apple, with an Apple TV 4K or HomePod
A Matter Thread plug
Joins the Thread mesh and strengthens it for battery sensors
Is Alexa only, and will stay that way
Amazon Smart Plug
Lives in the Alexa app with no second account
Will have thirty or more devices
Thread or Zigbee plugs
Every Wi-Fi plug takes an IP address on your router
Energy monitoring is the feature worth paying a little more for. A plug that reports watts turns "is the old fridge expensive" into a number, and it is the only way most people ever find the device that never turns off.
Behind the TV or the desk
Smart power strip — the Kasa HS300 strip has six individually switched outlets with per-outlet energy monitoring, per its listing. One device and one IP address instead of six.
FAQ
Questions people ask
What is the difference between Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread?
Both speak Matter, so both work with Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and SmartThings. Wi-Fi plugs join your router and need nothing else. Thread plugs join a low-power mesh and need a Thread border router somewhere in the house.
Can a smart plug run a space heater?
Only if the plug's rating covers the heater's draw and the manufacturer allows it. Many plug makers advise against heaters entirely. Check the plug's listed maximum load before plugging in anything that heats.
Why does my smart plug keep going offline?
Usually Wi-Fi: a 5 GHz-only network, a router that has run out of addresses, or a weak signal behind furniture. Plugs on Thread avoid the router problem entirely, which is one reason Apple homes lean toward them.
