Lighting

The best smart lights, split by bulbs and wall switches

Lighting is the automation people keep using after the novelty wears off. It is also where the most money gets wasted, because nobody decides first whether the bulb or the switch should be the smart part.

The Philips Hue Starter Kit is the best smart lighting system for most homes that want color and scenes, because the bridge keeps bulbs off your Wi-Fi. If guests and family need a normal switch on the wall, start with Lutron Caséta instead.

Motion, dimmer switches
  • The bridge runs the bulbs on Zigbee rather than your Wi-Fi, which is why Hue setups stay reliable at a scale where Wi-Fi bulbs fall apart.
  • The ecosystem is the point: dimmer switches, motion sensors and wall modules all speak the same system.
  • Ten years of firmware support behind it. Most smart lighting brands have not existed that long.

  • Matter over Thread natively, so no Nanoleaf hub and no Nanoleaf account in the critical path.
  • Response is near-instant because the command never leaves the house.
  • Cheaper per bulb than Hue once you account for not buying a bridge.

Skip this ifWithout a Thread border router these are ordinary bulbs. Check you have one before ordering.

  • It replaces the wall switch, so the light still works exactly as a light for anyone who does not care about apps.
  • Runs on its own radio band rather than Wi-Fi or Zigbee, and has the strongest reliability reputation in the category.
  • No neutral wire needed, which is the thing that blocks most smart switch retrofits in older homes.

Skip this ifIt dims existing bulbs rather than changing their color. If you want color scenes, buy bulbs instead of switches.

Bulb or switch: decide this first

Smart bulbs

  • Color and white tuning
  • No wiring, works in rentals
  • Breaks when someone flips the wall switch off

Smart switches

  • Everyone in the house uses them normally
  • Dims the bulbs you already have
  • Needs a backbox; some need a neutral wire

Most homes end up with both: switches in rooms other people use, bulbs in lamps and bedrooms where color earns its keep.

Cheaper ways in

  • Matter Wi-Fi bulbs (multipack) — Linkind's Matter A19 two-pack joins Wi-Fi with no hub or bridge. The cheap way to light a rented room; check the box says Matter, not only "works with Alexa".
  • Smart switch / dimmer — Kasa HS220 dimmers, three in a box. They need a neutral wire in the wall box, which older homes often lack, so look before ordering.
FAQ

Questions people ask

Do smart bulbs work if the wall switch is off?
No. A smart bulb needs power to listen for commands, so a switched-off circuit makes it an ordinary dead bulb. That single fact is why switch-based systems exist.
Do I need a neutral wire for a smart switch?
Many smart switches need one; some, like Lutron Caséta dimmers, are designed to work without it. Open the switch box with the breaker off and look for a white bundle before buying.
Is the Hue Bridge still necessary?
For a whole house of Hue bulbs, yes: it runs them on Zigbee rather than Wi-Fi and unlocks the accessories and scenes. For one or two lamps, Bluetooth or Matter bulbs without a bridge are simpler.
