The best smart home devices for Apple Home and HomeKit

Apple Home is fussier about networks than Alexa or Google Home. The reward is local control that keeps running when the internet does not, as long as the house has a home hub.

The best Apple Home setup starts with a home hub that is also a Thread border router, such as an Apple TV 4K, then favors Matter-over-Thread devices like the Eve Energy plug and the Aqara U400 lock.

Eve Energy (Matter)

Thread

An Apple household that wants nothing phoning home and no extra app account.

No account required
  • Thread rather than Wi-Fi, so it joins the mesh and extends it for every battery sensor in range.
  • No account, no cloud, no vendor app required once it is paired — the privacy story here is genuinely different.
  • Being a mains-powered Thread router is the quiet reason a house full of Thread sensors stops dropping offline.

Skip this ifIt needs a Thread border router already in the home. Nothing to pair it to? Start with the Tapo over Wi-Fi.

Hands-free unlock on supported phones
  • Apple Home Key plus a fingerprint reader plus a keypad plus a physical key covers every member of a household including the one who refuses apps.
  • Matter over Thread means it answers to all three major platforms rather than one.
  • Ultra-wideband lets it unlock as a supported phone approaches, with no tap and no code, which is the feature that turns a smart lock from a gadget into a habit.

Skip this ifMost of the good features need a Thread border router in range of the door. Confirm coverage first.

The home hub comes first

  • Apple TV 4K (4th generation) — Apple's listing names Thread in its connectivity and describes it as a home hub for remote control through the Home app. Currently on pre-order on Amazon.

A home hub is what lets automations run when your phone is away, and what other devices quietly depend on: ecobee's listing says built-in Siri needs an Apple home hub, and Aqara's lock listings say sharing Home Keys needs one. A HomePod mini also fills the role.

Where Apple homes get caught out

  • Cameras. Neither of this site's camera picks lists Apple Home, and Ring is built around Alexa. The Aqara G4 doorbell is the Apple-native option here.
  • Robot vacuums. Neither pick is listed as a Matter device, so do not count on Apple Home control.
  • "Works with Siri" is not Apple Home. A device that responds to Siri Shortcuts is not the same as one that appears in the Home app. Look for the Matter logo or "Works with Apple Home".
FAQ

Questions people ask

Is HomeKit the same as Apple Home?
Yes. HomeKit is the framework; Apple Home is the app and the platform name. Matter devices also appear in Apple Home.
Do I need a home hub for HomeKit?
For remote control, automations and many Thread devices, yes. An Apple TV or HomePod mini is the usual home hub.
Which smart lock works best with Apple Home?
The Aqara U400, for Home Key and hands-free unlocking on supported iPhones. The Schlage Encode Plus is the alternative for build quality.
