Smart locks

The best smart locks that still take a key

A smart lock has two jobs, and the first one is being a lock. Every pick here keeps a mechanical keyhole, because a dead battery should be an annoyance and not a locksmith call.

The Aqara Smart Lock U400 is the best smart lock for a household with mixed phones, because Matter over Thread, a fingerprint reader, a keypad and a key cover everyone. For build quality first, choose the Schlage Encode Plus.

Hands-free unlock on supported phones
  • Apple Home Key plus a fingerprint reader plus a keypad plus a physical key covers every member of a household including the one who refuses apps.
  • Matter over Thread means it answers to all three major platforms rather than one.
  • Ultra-wideband lets it unlock as a supported phone approaches, with no tap and no code, which is the feature that turns a smart lock from a gadget into a habit.

  • Certified to the highest BHMA residential rating for security, durability and finish, per Schlage's own listing.
  • Apple Home Key and built-in Wi-Fi without a bridge, which removes a failure point.
  • Schlage has been making deadbolts for a century and the mechanical part reflects that.

  • It starts as a Bluetooth keypad lock. Yale's listing says remote access can be added later with a Wi-Fi smart module sold separately, and Z-Wave versions of the same lock are sold for alarm systems.
  • Auto-Lock, optional Auto-Unlock and entry codes you can hand to visitors from the Yale Access app cover most of what people actually use a smart lock for.
  • This kit ships with a matching passage handleset, so the front door hardware matches without a second order.

Skip this ifOut of the box it is Bluetooth only: no remote access, and Apple Home is the only platform listed. Want Alexa or Google from day one? The Schlage Encode Plus has Wi-Fi built in.

Entry logs live in each maker's app. If you want them in one place with the cameras, pick the lock that joins the platform the cameras already use.

Battery life is a network question

A lock on Wi-Fi keeps a power-hungry radio awake; a lock on Thread or Bluetooth sips. That is why the Schlage card warns about more frequent battery changes, and why the Yale starts on Bluetooth and makes Wi-Fi an add-on. If the door is far from the router, Thread with a nearby border router is usually the more reliable choice as well.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What happens to a smart lock when the battery dies?
All three picks keep a mechanical keyhole, so the key still works. Most locks also warn in the app well before the battery runs out.
Do smart locks work with Apple Home Key?
The U400 and the Schlage Encode Plus both list Apple Home Key. This Yale kit lists Apple HomeKit but does not mention Home Key, so check the listing if that matters to you.
Can renters install a smart lock?
Only with the landlord's agreement, because it replaces the deadbolt. Keep the original hardware so it can go back on when you move out.
