Aqara Hub M3 vs Samsung SmartThings Station

Both are Matter controllers with Thread and Zigbee radios, and both share devices to other platforms. They differ in where the automations run and in the extras built into the box.

The Aqara Hub M3 is the better hub for a mixed household that wants automations to run locally and an IR blaster for the air conditioner. The SmartThings Station suits a SmartThings or Galaxy household that wants a simpler hub that doubles as a phone charger.

Samsung's own specification lists Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee and Bluetooth for the Station, plus wireless charging up to 15 W. It does not list Z-Wave or an IR blaster.

Where the M3 pulls ahead

  • Local automation. Aqara's listing describes the M3 as an edge hub that moves automations between Aqara hubs to local operation, with some notifications still needing the internet.
  • Infrared. A 360-degree IR blaster sends remote-control commands and, per the listing, can bring an IR air conditioner into Matter as a thermostat when paired with an Aqara temperature sensor.
  • Power and placement. PoE and a USB-C port that accepts a power bank or mini UPS, plus dual-band Wi-Fi.
  • No microphone or camera, and 8 GB of encrypted local storage for configuration, per the listing.

Where the Station makes more sense

If the household already lives in the SmartThings app, or owns Samsung appliances and Galaxy phones, the Station is the natural hub. It charges a phone on the nightstand, which is an unusually good excuse to put a hub somewhere central with decent radio coverage. It is also the simpler of the two to explain to everyone else in the house.

  • Thread border router, Zigbee coordinator and Matter controller in one box, so one purchase ends the protocol argument.
  • Automations run on the device rather than in a cloud account, which means the lights still work when the internet does not.
  • Pairs into Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings from the same QR code — it does not make you pick a side.

Skip this ifyour home is entirely Apple and you already own an Apple TV 4K, you have a Thread border router already. Skip this.

  • A Matter controller, Thread border router and Zigbee hub for roughly the price of two smart plugs.
  • Doubles as a phone charger on the nightstand, which is the only reason a hub ever gets placed somewhere with good radio coverage.
  • SmartThings talks to Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home via Matter and Home Assistant, so it is not a dead end.

Skip this ifNo IR blaster and no local-only mode. If you want the TV and the air conditioner on the same remote, take the M3.
